IFFS celebrates partnership with Marks and Spencer

The Seafarers' Charity is excited to support a new partnership between Marks and Spencer and the International Fund for Fishing Safety (IFFS).

IFFS, managed by The Seafarers' Charity, exists to improve safety, reduce risk, and protect lives in fishing communities around the world. So far, IFFS has reached 180,000 fishers globally.

Now, its team will work with Marks and Spencer, who have invested in an IFFS funded project in Indonesia, driving practical safety improvements at community level. The International Pole & Line Foundation will work with fishing communities to understand why accidents happen and co-design practical training in safety, first aid and financial management. The project will help fishers build skills, reduce infections and strengthen livelihoods. It will also generate evidence to improve future safety policy and help build safer, more resilient fishing communities.

IFFS is a fund managed by The Seafarers’ Charity as part of a consortium of three organisations with Lloyds’ Register Foundation and FISH Platform.

Marks and Spencer has a long-standing commitment to safe and ethical fishing practices. Its long‑term Forever Fish campaign goes beyond certification requirements, focusing on sourcing all fish and shellfish responsibly and promoting broader sustainability across its supply chain.

"Fisher safety is often overlooked within sustainability conversations, yet it sits at the very heart of social responsibility. Safe working conditions, access to appropriate safety knowledge, and practical risk-reduction measures are fundamental to both human wellbeing and resilient seafood supply chains. Partnerships like this are essential if we are to build safer, fairer, and more sustainable fisheries.”

IFFS Coordinator

“Marks and Spencer has always believed that responsible sourcing begins with protecting the people at the heart of it. Our support for this programme with International Pole & Line Foundation in Indonesia strengthens safety, skills and long‑term resilience of fishers. By championing knowledge exchange and higher safety standards, we’re supporting fishers to drive meaningful, lasting improvements within their communities.” - Rebecca Webb, Human Rights Manager at Marks and Spencer
