Payroll giving is an easy and effective way UK taxpayers can contribute to the ecosystem of support for seafarers, allowing them and their families to live free from hardship.
What is this?
Payroll giving, also known as ‘give as you earn’, is a tax-efficient way to donate in the UK. It provides charities with a regular source of income at a lower cost to you. Here's how it works:
Donations are deducted directly from your gross (before tax) salary. You pay less tax because the donation reduces your taxable income. For example:
- Basic-Rate Taxpayer (20% tax rate): If you donate £10 per month, you save 20% in tax relief (£2), so the actual cost to you is £8.
- Higher-Rate Taxpayer (40% tax rate): If you donate £10 per month, you save 40% in tax relief (£4), making the actual cost to you just £6.
"Every penny works harder to improve seafarers’ lives."
Why The Seafarers’ Charity?
In 2025 The Seafarers’ Charity helped more than 400,000 beneficiaries in the UK and around the world. Through our network of delivery partners, we awarded £2.7m to address the challenges of a seafaring life.
For more than a century, The Seafarers’ Charity has been improving the lives of those who work at sea and their families. Established in 1917, we’ve grown into the largest independent funder of maritime welfare charities, delivering impactful support to enhance financial resilience, health, wellbeing, and safer working lives at sea.
Regular monthly gifts allow us to plan ahead and provide reliable funding for charities to continue this vital work.

For Employers
Payroll giving is a great way to boost employee engagement and a simple step toward your corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Companies with active Payroll Giving Programmes report up to 13% higher employee retention (PwC, 2024), and 85% of employees feel more connected to their workplace when they participate in payroll giving, fostering a sense of community and purpose (Deloitte, 2024).
It is straightforward to set up a payroll giving scheme for your employees. Email us at fundraising@theseafarerscharity.org and we can guide you through the simple steps.
