Seapost - September 2025

The latest e-newsletter from The Seafarers' Charity.

In this edition, we reflect on Merchant Navy Day 2025, when communities, organisations, and landmarks across the UK proudly flew the Red Ensign to celebrate the vital contribution of merchant seafarers. This year also marked the 10th anniversary of our Fly the Red Ensign campaign and coincided with the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, reminding us of the bravery of those who kept supply lines open in wartime. From 10 Downing Street to Tower Bridge, Cutty Sark, and local communities nationwide, the Red Ensign was raised, and supporters wore red or shared their support online. Thank you to everyone who took part!

We also look ahead to the Annual National Service for Seafarers at St Paul’s Cathedral on 8 October, marking the 120th anniversary of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The service is open to all and offers a moment to honour current seafarers, remember those of the past, and pay tribute to lives lost at sea.

At London International Shipping Week 2025, we joined Sailors’ Society, The Mission to Seafarers, and Stella Maris to host a panel on the future of seafarer welfare, discussing safety, mental health, and wellbeing with nearly 100 attendees from across the maritime sector. Meanwhile, the launch of the Seafarers 2040 report highlighted major changes ahead for the UK’s seafaring community over the next 15 years.

Our Charity of the Month is Cobhair Bharraigh, providing essential support for former seafarers living with dementia and their families in a remote island community far from major healthcare facilities. Thanks to a £15,000 grant from The Seafarers’ Charity, the charity continues delivering what manager Margaret Ann calls “a warm blanket of care”, helping elderly seafarers with mental, physical, or sensory impairments live with dignity.

Finally, get inspired by our #TeamSeafarersKGFS runners from the London Marathon 2025 and join us for London Marathon 2026 on 26 April 2026. Take on the challenge and raise essential funds to support seafarers and their families with emergency aid, mental health services, safety support, and more.

We also share updates on the Port-2-Port 2025 cycling challenge, our new diabetes study for seafarers, and celebrate National Inclusion Week with a video highlighting our commitment to equity, dignity, and belonging.
