Seapost - November 2025

The latest e-newsletter from The Seafarers' Charity.

In this edition, we highlight the Big Give Christmas Challenge, running from 2–9 December, when every donation to The Seafarers’ Charity will be matched £1 for £1. Your support will fund urgent mental health, crisis response, and financial guidance projects for seafarers and their families, providing a vital lifeline over the festive season.

This month, we partnered with the UK Harbour Masters Association at their autumn conference in London, where delegates donated nearly £2,000 in support of seafarers.

Our Chief Executive, Deborah Layde, was sworn in as a Younger Brother of Trinity House, continuing her longstanding commitment to supporting the seafaring community.

For our Charity of the Month, we spoke with Dan Smith from NeurodiversAtSea, who is helping seafarers access private assessments for conditions such as autism or dyslexia, unlocking life-changing support and diagnoses.

In this issue, we’re featuring BMT’s highlights from last year’s 24 Peaks Challenge and inviting you to take part in 2026, tackling up to 24 peaks over two days in the Lake District, covering 33 miles and 13,000 ft in total ascent.

In Sea Views podcast #21, Julia Gosling and Adam Parnell speak with Safe Harbours Australia about bulk carriers as the “workhorses of the sea” and best practice in bridge team management.

On Remembrance Sunday, Deborah Layde laid the charity wreath at Trinity House Square Gardens, honouring those lost at sea and the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets.

We supported Fishing Into the Future with board development sessions, helping strengthen governance and plan for future growth.

Our colleague Fredrick Odhiambo Onono represented The Seafarers’ Charity at the Caribbean Heroes Flag-Raising Ceremony aboard HMS Belfast, celebrating Caribbean maritime heritage and the legacy of the Windrush Generation.

Finally, Deborah Layde shared insights in SAFETY4SEA on the evolving skills required for modern seafarers, calling on the industry to improve working conditions and support recruitment of the next generation.
