Seapost - June 2025
The latest e-newsletter from The Seafarers' Charity.
In this edition, we share highlights from our 108th Annual Meeting aboard HMS Wellington, where we welcomed our President, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and heard a powerful keynote on mental health from Vice President Nusrat Ghani MP. We also celebrated this year’s President’s Awards, recognising exceptional contributions to maritime welfare.
We’re proud to share that The Seafarers’ Charity is a finalist for the Diversity & Inclusion Champion Award at the upcoming Maritime UK Awards – and 2025’s chosen charity! This nomination marks our ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and representation within the maritime welfare space.
Ahead of the Day of the Seafarer on 25 June, we’re spotlighting the campaign theme My Harassment-Free Ship and sharing resources from partners working to end bullying and harassment at sea. We were also featured on BBC News for our support of the Arctic Corsair restoration project in Hull. A £20,000 grant from The Seafarers’ Charity is helping recruit volunteers with seafaring experience to bring this iconic vessel’s story to life.
This issue also highlights our Chief Executive Deborah Layde’s recognition by The Fishmongers’ Company, a new Sea Views podcast on offshore energy safety, and a powerful case study from our Charity of the Month, the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society. And with Pride Month underway, we’re proud to continue building a workplace where everyone feels safe, respected, and empowered to be themselves.
Finally, we look ahead to Waves of Influence, our special event celebrating women leading the maritime sector, taking place on 9 July at Fishmongers’ Hall. Organised in partnership with Sailors’ Children’s Society and supported by The Fishmongers’ Company and Trinity House, the event will spotlight leadership, resilience, and the ongoing challenges faced by women across the industry.
