Seapost - August 2025

The latest e-newsletter from The Seafarers' Charity.

In this edition, we look ahead to Merchant Navy Day on 3 September, celebrating the vital contribution of seafarers across the UK. This year marks the 10th anniversary of our Fly the Red Ensign campaign, which has grown into a national celebration of these everyday heroes. Whether flying the Red Ensign, wearing red, or sharing photos on social media with #MerchantNavyDay, there are plenty of ways to show support, and a free Social Media Toolkit is available to help you get involved.

We’re also excited that the Big Give Wellbeing at Sea campaign pledge period has been extended to 7 September. Every pledge made could be matched to double its impact, helping us fund vital services for seafarers and their families.

On 8 September, join the launch of the Maritime Charities Group Demographics Research 2025 at Trinity House, providing insights into UK seafarer communities and the future of maritime welfare.

In partnership with the Nautical Institute, we’re expanding training opportunities for seafarers, offering scholarships in leadership, mental health, and team wellbeing to improve safety and support at sea.

Looking ahead, the Annual National Service for Seafarers will take place on 8 October at St Paul’s Cathedral, honouring seafarers from all sectors and marking the 120th anniversary of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Attendance is free and open to all.

Through a grant from The Seafarers’ Charity, the Institute for Human Rights and Business delivers workshops, advocacy, and industry reform to prevent illegal recruitment fees and protect seafarers from exploitation.

Funded by The Seafarers’ Charity, the latest Sea Views podcast explores mental health challenges in the superyacht sector, highlighting pressures faced by crew and the importance of psychological safety at sea.

Finally, in partnership with Relate, six fully funded online counselling sessions are available to support seafarers and their families, helping them navigate personal challenges and maintain wellbeing while working away at sea.
