Fly the Red Ensign and stand with Britain’s seafarers
On Thursday 3 September, we encourage people and organisations across the UK to mark Merchant Navy Day by flying the Red Ensign and recognising the vital contribution of merchant seafarers.
Our charity launched the ‘Fly the Red Ensign’ campaign in 2015, helping to shine a light on the seafarers whose work is essential to the UK, yet whose contribution can often go unnoticed.
Every year, the Red Ensign – affectionately known as the ‘Red Duster’ – takes pride of place at historic properties, political institutions, parish and town council offices, village greens and many other locations around the country. From these prominent landmarks to homes and workplaces, each flag is a visible expression of thanks to merchant seafarers, past and present.
Remembering their service, recognising their importance
Merchant seafarers have long played a crucial role in keeping the UK supplied. Their courage and dedication have kept vital supply routes operating through global conflicts, including both world wars, and during more recent emergencies such as the Covid-19 pandemic, Strait of Hormuz crisis, and the war in Ukraine.
Their role remains just as important today. Around 90% of the UK’s traded goods are transported by sea, making merchant seafarers a fundamental part of the nation’s economy and everyday life.
Merchant Navy Day provides an opportunity to pause, remember their contribution and show our appreciation for the seafarers and families who support them.

“It’s that time of year when I seek your support in marking Merchant Navy Day on Thursday 3rd September by flying the Red Ensign. This year more than ever, our dependence on our nation's Merchant Navy has been highlighted by the events in the Arabian Gulf and especially the Strait of Hormuz.
“Whether flying the flag or spreading the word about their tireless work transporting our island nation’s trade, this is an excellent opportunity to show our seafarers and their families how much we all value them.

There are plenty of ways to get involved in Merchant Navy Day, whether you’re at home, at work or in your local community.
- Fly the Red Ensign: Raise the Red Ensign from a flagpole at your home, workplace or community centre on 3 September and help make merchant seafarers’ contribution visible.
- Wear red instead: No flagpole? Show your support in another way by wearing something red at home or at work. Get your friends and colleagues involved and share your pictures online!
