Maritime welfare charities join forces at London International Shipping Week 2025

The Seafarers’ Charity hosted a panel on ‘The Future of Seafarer Welfare’ at London International Shipping Week 2025 along with Sailors' Society, The Mission to Seafarers, and Stella Maris Org.

As the maritime world undergoes rapid transformation, driven by geopolitical volatility, climate innovation, and new technologies, the welfare of seafarers cannot be forgotten.

So, on Tuesday 16th September, the four major maritime welfare charities hosted an expert panel on seafarer welfare during London International Shipping Week 2025.

The world relies on seafarers to move nearly 90% of global trade; this crucial workforce’s needs are ever evolving. Maritime charities are on the frontline of welfare, responding to crises such as abandonment, harassment, and fatigue, and also helping industry understand what seafarers need to enjoy a rich and fulfilling career.

Nearly 100 attendees gathered at city law firm Holman Fenwick Willan (HFW) for a breakfast briefing to explore what “safety” really means in today’s seascape, and to examine the tools, partnerships, and culture shifts needed to support seafarers' well-being in a time of change.

After opening remarks from our CEO Deborah Layde, the audience heard from:

  • Patrick Ryan, UK P&I Club's Sustainability Director
  • Captain Louise Sara, Director of Maritime Standards at Carnival Corporation
  • Will Maclachlan, Partner in HFW’s shipping team
  • Karen Davis, Managing Director of the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF)

Seafarers are human beings whose welfare should be at the forefront of all our minds. They’re also key workers who are critical to global ‘business as usual.’  - Deborah Layde, CEO

A lively discussion was followed by Q&A from the audience and the CEOs of our partner charities Sailors’ Society, Mission to Seafarers, and Stella Maris. It was fantastic to see shipowners, charities, regulators and the wider maritime industry all represented at the event.

Many thanks to our hosts HFW and to our sponsors, Ship Money. Thank you to all who attended and contributed to such an enjoyable event as part of London International Shipping Week.
