In June 2020 The Seafarers’ Charity highlighted the lack of a centralised database for reporting suicides at sea.

Unlike occupational accidents, injuries and diseases which are reportable to the International Labour Organization, wider causes of death at sea are not required to be reported. This prevents opportunity for trend identification and development of interventions aimed at addressing issues and preventing suicide at sea.

The Seafarers’ Charity supports the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) proposed amendment to Section A.4.3.5 of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 to support the reporting and collation of a data set by the International Labour Organization on all fatalities at sea.
